Today, October 5th, as the world unites to celebrate World Teachers’ Day, we at Zaks Foundation for Humanity (ZFH) turn our hearts and minds to the incredible educators shaping Nigeria’s future. This significant day commemorates the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, a landmark document that establishes global benchmarks for the rights, responsibilities, and professional development of teachers.

The Unbreakable Spirit: A Testament to Nigerian Teachers

In Nigeria, the journey of an educator is often one of profound dedication and immense challenge. From the bustling classrooms of Lagos to the remote schools in the farthest corners of our nation, our teachers demonstrate a resilience that truly embodies the spirit of humanity. They tirelessly impart knowledge, inspire young minds, and foster critical thinking, often with limited resources, in overcrowded spaces, and sometimes facing economic uncertainties. This unwavering commitment to their vocation, even amidst adversity, is a beacon of hope and a testament to their powerful impact. We celebrate their strength, their ingenuity, and their relentless pursuit of a brighter future for our children.

Acknowledging the Difficult Realities

While we celebrate their heroic efforts, we cannot overlook the systemic issues that continue to impede their vital work. Nigerian teachers grapple with significant challenges. Theyinclude:

1. Inadequate Remuneration and Welfare: Many teachers face non-competitive salaries and irregular payments, which can undermine morale and make the profession less attractive.

2. Lack of Modern Resources and Infrastructure: A critical shortage of up-to-date instructional materials, technology, and even basic classroom amenities affects the quality of teaching and learning.

3. Limited Access to Professional Development: Opportunities for continuous training, as emphasized by the 1966 and 1997 UNESCO Recommendations, are often scarce, preventing teachers from acquiring new pedagogical skills and adapting to evolving educational landscapes.

At Zaks Foundation for Humanity (ZFH), we deeply appreciate these everyday heroes. We believe that supporting teachers is not just an educational imperative, but a humanitarian one. Through our Galvanizing Resources for Educating Adolescents and Teachers (GREAT) initiative, we are actively working to uplift the teaching profession. We are involved in:

1. Teacher Training Programs: We equip teachers with modern pedagogical techniques, subject matter expertise, and digital literacy skills.

2. Improved Learning Facilities: We work to enhance physical learning environments, making them more conducive to effective teaching and learning.

3. Classroom Resources: We provide essential learning materials and tools that empower teachers and enrich student experiences.

Our work extends beyond teachers to students, especially those in rural communities, ensuring equitable access to quality education and learning materials.

A Path Forward: Invest in Our Future, For Humanity’s Sake.

To our incredible Nigerian teachers: Hold on to your faith. Your dedication is the bedrock of our nation’s progress and humanity’s future. We at ZFH are with you.

We must collectively rethink the support system for our teachers. We call for a national “Teacher First” Initiative focused on concrete solutions:

1. Mandatory Competitive Salary Structure: Implement a national, competitive, and timely salary package that reflects the immense value teachers bring to society.

2. Robust Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Fund: Establish a dedicated fund ensuring every teacher has regular access to high-quality, paid training opportunities.

3. Sustainable Infrastructure & Resource Modernization: Prioritize investment in upgrading school facilities and providing essential teaching and learning resources.

Join ZFH to Support Our Teachers

We urge all stakeholders, the Federal and State Governments, Local Government Authorities, the private sector, community leaders, parents, and international development partners, to join Zaks Foundation for Humanity. Let’s collaborate to empower our teachers, elevate the profession, and ensure quality education for every Nigerian child.

Together, for the sake of humanity, let’s build a future where every teacher is respected, supported, and equipped to shine. Happy World Teachers’ Day!
